This remarkable approach has already changed the lives of many families I know. I wish I had had this knowledge when I was raising my own children. After describing these methods to my daughters, they instantly started using them with great success. It just made so much sense. I love how people light up when they hear about it. It s almost like people realize in a flash that life has changed forever to a new way that is going to make everything better and easier. And I feel like I m 10 times more effective in my work with families now, too. –Grandparent and Therapist, NYC
The best part of learning this approach is that I so enjoy how much I can now inspire my children. A close second is that my fiancé and my parents, who used to constantly offer advice, now are following my lead. It is so much fun to see how confident they are in me, which matches how I feel…like an extraordinary parent. I can t wait to use the Nurtured Heart Approach in my classroom. –Parent and Teacher, Atlanta, GA

most of them excellent and looking back if I could choose only a …I have read countless parenting books and articles, most of them excellent and looking back if I could choose only a few, All Children Flourishing would be one of them (with a couple of cautions/questions). It’s written for young children but the book’s concept – the Nurtured Heart Approach can be adapted to teenagers, adults and as a self-help book. ONE CAUTION – read the entire book before using the techniques because some earlier parts of the book are easy to misunderstand and are not explained until later in the book. Not knowing this, I almost rejected the concept after reading the first few chapters. I wish the author would revise the book to put details of his “reset/ time out” (which is NOT to be confused with a typical time out) as soon as he brings it up instead of later in the book- this in my opinion could influence the success or failure of the concept.I gave All Children Flourishing 4 stars instead of 5 because I have a hard time giving attention only when things are “going well” and withdrawing “energy” (attention) when the child or person is upset, behaving poorly, etc and things are “not going well”. If someone is acting in a negative way, they are feeling a negative way. I believe it’s important to acknowledge a person’s negative feelings regardless of age. Everyone deserves to have their struggles and underlying feelings understood, cared about and accepted. This also reduces the negative feelings. Will this approach be as effective if the child/ person is ever given any attention during negative actions/feelings? I don’t know. I do know the author’s approach seems to have remarkable results in improving behavior and self-esteem in schools and homes. Since both behavior and self esteem improved, the feelings and thoughts behind them must have improved and become more positive. This book should be among the most popular mainstream parenting books and one possible reason it’s not could be the book cover. The author seems to have a very special place in his heart for the cover painting since it was painted by his daughter. However, a lovely image of a sad young woman has nothing to do with an effective, empowering parenting book, and I would never have chosen this book if it was not highly recommended to me. I would love to see a reprint come out with the change I mentioned in my first paragraph above, some clarification on my second paragraph, and a new cover with the title in larger print and a painting (by the author’s daughter) of a happy child.

Great book. Everyone should read it!It has really helped my relationships with my three kids especially my oldest boy who has ADHD and Oppositional defiant disorder, the typical kid this approach was designed for. I have really seen him blossom under this approach, when I remember to apply it. It has helped me see the positive, appreciate the progress and not stress over or energize the negative. I am trying to put it into practice in all my relationships, not just those with my kids. Most people respond to being appreciated, especially if the appreciation is honest and specific. I think everyone should read this book.

Howard Glasser’s approach to parenting and child careI read All Children Flourishing by Howard Glasser in order to stay up to date on methods for working with children in today’s social climate. Anyone who has worked successfully in a facility for difficult children would have much to teach me. I read the entire book with great interest, was struck by Glasser’s openness and honesty, combining description of a technique with a personal memoir. We can all begin today to use his approach, but it would take time and effort to become proficient, adapting his technique to our own personal style in an effective way. Thank you,Howard Glasser, for writing this book!
